Also, I am sure that you, as council members, would like to move this subject to conclusion. But it does have a substantial impact to the residents along the route, and you will be making a decision that we as residents will live with for the duration. I therefore recommend that you take up the Anholm Bikeway plan in two segments. First the Broad/Mission intersection to Foothill. Second, the Chorro/Lincoln intersection to Broad/Mission intersection. There are few alternatives in the segment of Foothill to Broad/Mission intersection. So the alternatives have been called “preferred option” and “do nothing option”. I believe that the Lincoln Street option has been combined into this “do nothing” option unfairly, and has not been given real consideration by the staff in presentations to the public information meeting, the Bicycle Advisory Committee, and the Bike SLO County organization. The meetings have effectively been “thumbs up - or thumbs down” on the two options as presented. As I understand the goal of increasing bicycle ridership, I believe you will have missed the mark on Chorro by funneling experienced riders with interested/ concerned, on one of the bussiest roads, riding uphill and against traffic, with a number of intersections. If you take council action on the Broad/Mission to Foothill section of the bicycle plan, and then focus exclusively on the routing and appeal to the target group, I believe you will find more positive responses from residents and productive suggestions from the bicycle interests. There are enhancements that could be made to the Lincoln Street plan that would further enhance safety and comfort that would appeal to the particular target group defined as “interested, but concerned”. I conclude with the hope that you will take council action in segments as I stated above. Also, I would hope that you refer the Chorro/Lincoln to Broad/Mission segment back to staff to include real enhancements to the Lincoln Street option. There are only so many things you can accomplish on a street, and to expect Chorro Street to accommodate everyone and everything is not realistic, especially if you have a good alternative. Thank you for your consideration. John Valpey 476 Chorro Street 1
