Subject:City Council Meeting 2/6/18 Item #12
Dear Mayor and Council members:
As a resident of Broad St. for the last 23 years, I and my neighbors all want to lessen the auto traffic on Chorro and
Broad St., which in turn would make it
safer for bicyclists, pedestrians and residential car owners.
In our neighborhood, we have stretches of road that require minimal changes to increase safety, as these roads
already have less traffic.
Please consider an informal bike path on Lincoln to West. This would solve so many safety issues for the bicyclists that
plague the Bike Track on Broad St and Chorro,
1.) The Bike Path is too narrow for bidirectional travel
2.) Consider small children riding bicycles and sharing the lane with older and stronger bicyclists who will use the
street to get around the slower bicyclists then add to this mix
quieter cars and headphone use
3.) There are so many driveways that cross the double Bike Path
4.) Sewer grates that bicyclists swerve around
5.) Stop signs, that slows the progress of bicyclists
Lincoln to West solves all these issues. Even if some cyclists find the hill on Chorro difficult to pedal they can opt to
cross at Mission to Broad St.,
where " Road sharing " appears to be working.
The biggest part of this plan that makes the Bike Path work is the Pedestrian/Bike overpass of the 101. "The Future
Bridge to Somewhere"
23 years ago I heard the on and off ramps on Broad St. were to be closed.
The closest ramp to replace Broad St would be Pepper St. How many Millions, or Tens of Millions (or Hundreds for
that matter) will it cost to achieve this goal?
Where will the money come from, more sales taxes, increased city fees. Sadly not every resident has a six-figure
income, or Trust Fund
Isn't there already an unfinished Railroad Trail? Lets spend future dollars to finish it!
While on this subject, lets spend future dollars on:
1.) reeducating bicyclists and auto drivers not to cross double yellow lines on streets that have them
2.) reeducate auto drivers to stop before the large white line at intersections, instead of in the intersection
3.) reeducate person on the street at night to wear clothing that's easier to see
4.) better street lighting
5.) repairing and extending sidewalks on Broad St and Chorro
Lincoln to West is a safer alternative to the current plan. Road sharing works, I leave early and drive slowly, following
1
the bicyclist in front of me, who usually
gives me a hand wave of thanks.
Most thankfully and respectively,
Steven Longcor
