Subject:Feb. 6th vote on proposed changes on Chorro, Broad and Ramona
I wish to voice my opposition to the proposed changes on Chorro, Broad and Ramona for bike
accommodations. The plan as it is outlined sounds dangerous for all parties concerned. Bikes travelling in
both directions will not be easily visible for drivers backing out of driveways; the bikes still have intersections
to cross; and finally crossing diagonally to return to normal travel will be confusing to motorists and bicyclists
alike. The narrow lanes for two-way traffic for vehicles will be a recipe for disaster considering the widths of
some SUVs and pickup trucks, especially factoring in today’s often distracted driver. Given the size the our
emergency vehicles, especially fire engines, it will be difficult, if even possible, for them to get past traffic that
has no place to pull over.
The proposed cost of these changes would come at a time when the City is already hard-pressed
financially. We need to get square with CalPers, a current substantial financial burden, and maybe even finally
fix the multitude of potholed and rough streets and replace streets signs that are no longer legible due to sun
fade. Inasmuch as the City keeps approving new housing tracts without seeming to give any consideration to
our dwindling water supply and other infrastructure, I would rather see our funds spent there. Those projects
would benefit the City as a whole, and not benefit the few (bike riders) while burdening the many (vehicles
and residents on the affected streets).
Please table this item until the more necessary needs of the City are met.
