Subject:Anholm Bikeway
Dear Mayor Harmon and Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council,
Several weeks ago, I wrote to you, on behalf of the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club, to offer our support for the
Anholm Bikeway preferred route that includes protected bike lanes on Chorro and Broad Streets, along with
other bicycle infrastructure improvements.
Please be assured that the SLOBC is very supportive of the city’s efforts to improve our transportation
infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians, reduce traffic congestion and improve the overall health of our
community. However, since sending our letter, I have received some pushback from our members about the
Anholm plan. Several concerns have been raised:
The safety implications of a bi-directional cycle track crossing in front of so many residential driveways,
•
The concerns raised by residents of the Anholm neighborhood and the divisive nature of this issue within the
•
community.
It was my understanding that the City Council must choose between Option A (the preferred plan) and Option
B (the Lincoln Street alternative). However, according to the staff report, you do have some latitude to adopt
some type of hybrid plan or even return to the drawing board and devise a plan that is more acceptable to a
majority of the affected community.
It is still my intent to have a representative from the SLOBC attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday
evening and offer our support for the City’s efforts to create a better transportation infrastructure for all users of
our roadways.
Thank you for your consideration.
Susan McTaggart
President
San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club
