My son was in kindergarten then. He is now in 4th grade. We are so close to solving this problem and making this section of our community safer for all users, regardless of their mode of travel. You’ve heard a lot of shouting lately from every direction. I know I don’t need to remind you about the massive amount public input that resulted in the General Plan’s 20% mode split goal and a budget cycle that prioritized bike/ped infrastructure and Safe Routes to Schools. You all honored that important process when you directed staff to fine-tune their original proposals for the Broad St. Bike Boulevard. (Thank you!) What you may not know, however, is what took place at the public workshops that followed. Those events were models of civil discourse. Your skilled transportation staff guided residents through a process that brought together community members with disparate views. They addressed residents’ fears and heard our concerns, and they came up with a plan that they call “preferred” because it does the best job of addressing safety issues while moving us closer to the City’s established goals. I hope you will continue to honor the civic process that has taken place slowly, cautiously and deliberately over the past several years. Please support the “preferred” option that will slow car traffic throughout the Anholm neighborhood, improve pedestrian and disabled access, and help convince would-be bike commuters that they can safely leave their cars at home.
