Dear Esteemed Mayor Harmon and Honorable Council Members, It is my hope that you will choose the Preferred Alternative as the choice for the Broad Street Bicycle Boulevard proposal. I am so impressed with the thorough commitment SLO city staff has made to study the options, benefits, and disadvantages of the Broad Street Bicycle Boulevard project. The details and graphs in the Final Reports have been very helpful. As a rider, Figure 8 on both reports makes it clear to me that the Preferred Alternative will bring about the greatest increase in ridership. Like the Morro Bike Boulevard to the Southeast, the Broad Street project is the important connecting artery to downtown for cyclists from the Northwest side of town; it makes sense to make the main cycling road as bike friendly as possible to all cycling levels. The Preferred Alternative will admittedly impact the neighborhood residents. I want again to compliment the city staff on their thoughtful review of parking and traffic findings and issues with the two options. It is assuring to read that even with the loss of parking spaces, people will be able to find parking, they just may have to walk a little further than has become habit. More importantly, strategies, such as ADA sites for residents who meet that criteria, have already been suggested to make sure residents with mobility issues will be able to access their homes. Before children, my husband and I used our bikes often to commute around the downtown SLO area (we live in the Sinsheimer neighborhood). Last year, we stopped commuting on the north side to Pacheco School after a few too many close calls. It is my hope that as my two sons' riding awareness and abilities improve, so will the safety of the main bike- commuting roads in SLO so that we can again return to more frequent bike commuting. Thank you for your support and commitment to improve our neighborhoods and environment. Kindly, Laura Slaughter, RN 1
