Subject:Support for Preferred Alternative
Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
I am a former BAC volunteer member, avid cycling commuter, exhausted mother of two young boys (who love their
bikes), wife of a mountain biker, resident of the Anholm neighborhood, and former semi-professional cyclist. I am
writing to encourage the City Council to adopt the Preferred Alternative of the Anholm Bikeway (Broad Street Bicycle
Boulevard) proposal. The Preferred Alternative creates safer streets for everyone, and will make SLO an even happier
City.
The Preferred Alternative will play a major role in providing Safe Routes to School for students attending Bishop’s Peak
and Pacheco Elementary schools. We should be able to get our kids to school safely, no matter how we choose to
roll. Driving to school is considered safe and quick and sadly all my neighbors who live just a few blocks from Bishop and
Pacheco don't feel biking is safe and convenient. But it doesn't have to be this way. With safer, more convenient bike
routes, we can start to give bike riders the same rights and comfort as someone who chooses to drive a car.
I've been sad reading the comments by my neighbors who are attacking each other for the way we choose to commute
and I can no longer read the "Nextdoor" comments and online comment letters. I applaud you for having the strength
to read through so much anger and frustration and I encourage you to make a decision for the good of our Bike Friendly
City, the environment, and the safety for all our commuters.
Cycling changed my life. It has brought me confidence, independence and happiness in ways that only bike riders seem
to empathize with during this debate. So let's get more people on bicycles, and decrease the tension in our hood.
Furthermore, I am more than happy to give up parking in front of my house on West Street if it reduces car traffic, and I
can help any neighbors affected pull in their groceries or their trash cans.
Thank you and thank you to your City engineers and staff,
Kristina Olmos
