Subject:Anholm Bikeway Preferred Alt Support
Councilmembers,
I want to express my support for the preferred alternative for the Anholm Bikeway.
To summarize my opinion on the matter, our public right-of-way corridors are the domain of the entire community and
their use should be ever evolving to meet the needs of the community. To best meet the goals we have set for our
community we should prioritize safe facilities for all users, and do our best to create infrastructure that encourages
alternate modes of transportation. As there are many competing interests for this corridor there will be
compromise. From the development of our bicycle master plan to where we are today, the City staff has done an
excellent job creating a plan that addresses multiple concerns.
The biggest points to support this decision are:
1. City goal for Multimodal Transportation: The preferred alternative does the best job to promote cycling as an
alternative to driving.
2. City goal for Climate Action – work towards a “net-zero carbon City”: The preferred alternative promotes cycling
and perhaps discourages driving for convenience
3. We subscribe to the Vision 0 Initiative: which states “one death on our city streets is too many”, The preferred
alternative is the best solution to make this corridor as safe as possible for all users of the road. This corridor is
the critical connection between downtown and the northern neighborhoods, including two elementary
schools. The seamless integration with the safe routes to school project is a big win for all of us. That said, I
know there has been some major concerns raised about the safety of methods proposed in the preferred
alternative, and as a Civil engineer I recognize those concerns, and I trust in our City staff to prioritize safety as
they continue to develop the plans for this project.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Chenin Otto
