Dear Mayor Harmon, Vice Mayor Christianson,
Council Member Gomez, Council Member Pease, and Council Member Rivoire:
My family and I live on Chorro Street in the Anholm neighborhood and I'm writing to ask you to please
vote AGAINST the Preferred Alternative for the Broad Street Bike Blvd.
We support the Lincoln alternative as a fair compromise between the desires of cyclists commuting
through the neighborhood as well as residents' needs for continued access to their own
homes. Sharrows work, especially if there is more enforcement of speed limits on motorized
vehicles.
We cycle and we support increasing bicycle infrastructure in SLO to make biking more appealing and
safer for more people, thus decreasing the number of car trips in the city. But we don't think the
Preferred Alternative is the way to do this in the Anholm neighborhood.
We agree with many of the points Richard Schmidt brought up in his recent Tribune Viewpoint
regarding safety (or lack thereof) for cyclists with the Preferred Alternative. We're especially
concerned with the location of the bike lanes directly next to driveways with little room for cyclists to
take evasive action if needed. For residents, the removal of parking will cause hardship for residents
accessing their own homes, especially if they have difficulties with mobility. Contractors, landscapers,
deliveries, etc. will also be adversely impacted.
With all the development the Council is approving, are you making efforts to implement Complete
Streets? It is easier to create safe access for all users, regardless of ability and mode, before streets
are built. That said, these ideas can still be implemented on existing wide streets (like Broad Street
for instance, between South and Orcutt).
Best,
Christina Muller
