I live and work in the City of San Luis Obispo and am a parent of two children (15 and 12) who cycle as a means of transportation. I live in the Sinsheimer neighborhood and ride with some regularity along Chorro and Broad streets and did so more frequently when my kids were attending Pacheco Elementary. The current street configuration can be dangerous, given the road width for cyclists passing a parked car with sometimes impatient drivers. The preferred alternative will provide riders with a separation from the travel lane that will make riding more comfortable, especially for less experienced riders. This improvement supports our City’s commitment of a 20% bicycle mode share shift and provides a critical cross town route for students traveling to and from Pacheco or Bishops Peak Elementary Schools and to SLO High. It is also used by families who ride from the Foothill side of town to Laguna Middle School, but do not feel comfortable riding Foothill to LOVR. I understand there are competing interests for this roadway, but would like to point out that the majority of roadways in our town prioritize vehicle travel and on-street parking. Our City leadership and staff are making an admirable effort to implement improvements across town in an effort to create connecting routes that make biking safer and more comfortable for all users. This corridor is an example of a missing connection that the preferred alternative will connect. It is the right time and place to choose bicycle infrastructure as the priority over private parking. Thank you for time and thought you have given this important project. Sincerely, Melanie Mills 1
