Dear Council,
As some of you may know, there are few people in town more committed to cycling as transportation than m yself. I was
BikeSLO Volunteer of the Year in 2013. About 75% of my trips are by bike, e-bike or tandem e-bike and I've logged perhaps
150k miles in my life, most as transportation, not sport. I substitute some 3-5,000 miles a year of car travel with bike/e-bike
travel.
We all know that the way to get more people on bikes is through better engineering, better enforcement and better education. I
ride the Broad St Bike Boulevard every single weekday, sometimes four times.
The section from Lincoln/Chorro to Ramona is as good as city routes get without major bike amenities and needs little if any
alteration, especially in light of the emerging e-bike market, which will flatten every grade. I can't see how this project within that
section significantly improves anything for any prospective riders, (of which I doubt there are more than 100. What does staff
say?).
I can't see the value in disrupting the neighborhood for that section. I am in full support, however, of the Ramona/LDS/Ferrini
section. It's not up for discussion today but we should make Peach one-way from the west and put a 12-foot ped/bike path under
101. Turning left from Peach onto Chorro is a long wait with a slow, uphill-ish start.
I agree with former Mayor Ken Schwartz that the heart of our quality of life in SLO is the integrity of our neighborhoods.
I applaud the Council for its enthusiasm for creating more and safer bike transportation. Please consider that by doing the wrong
thing and creating enemies you simply set our cause back. Please reject the plans and redesign leaving the existing Broad St. but
continuing with the Ramona/LDS/Ferrini improvement.
I wish to thank staff for their diligent work and for the efforts made to listen to the people most impacted. The people haves
spoken loud and clear in rejecting this plan. You need to demonstrate that you haven't just listen but that you have actually
heard. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Bob Shanbrom
BikeSLO Volunteer of the Year 2013
