Jan: Docent, Donn Clarius – "The Art of Persuasion!" A century ago America was fractureured into 3 opposing camps: in the spring of 1918 only 1/4 were pro-Wilson but 3/4 were vehemently anti; half of them were betrayed; they only re-elected him in 1916 because he "kept us out of war," but 5 weeks after his 2nd Inauguration he declared war; amazingly half of those who had called him a coward for NOT going to war wanted us to help Germany! There followed an intensive campaign to change public opinion: toe-tapping pro-war tunes ("Over There"), posters that demonized Germans as barbarian "huns" bayonetting babies, etc. Britain's royal family whose name was German renamed themselves after one of their castles (Windsor). How did the Jacks feel about WW1? I have videos of the pro-war campaign, & aftermath, & am eager to share it using our TV but it must be done a.s.a.p! Darnell OUTREACH: An ongoing challenge is attracting guests to the house. In 2018 the docents need to expand in the area of outreach. It would be helpful if each docent would bring the name of one group, club or organization along with their contact person and their phone number or email address. Presenters needed. Let me, Toni or Lois know if you can present. SCHEDULER needed Exploring Jack History at the Pioneer Museum in Paso Robles On October 26th Wendy Stockton, Marilyn Darnell, Dorothy Sundbye, Pam Hurd, Toni Kincaid, Chris Oswald and Lois Crotser toured the Pioneer Museum that highlighted artifacts belonging to Howard Jack and the Jack Ranch. Howard’s saddle, desk, horn chair (pictured) and boots with decorative silver tips covering nearly the entire front of his boots, as well as a restored Civil War military escort wagon were among the artifacts. No pictures or information about either were pointed out. Project? The Pioneer Museum has pages of people or families that are done by outsiders, such as the Jack House docents. The collection does not have a page on Howard Jack. It would be a good project to highlight the youngest child of R. E. and Nellie Hollister Jack for visitors to the museum to learn about him, the Jack Ranch and the Jack House. If you are interested let it be known. The one-room Geneseo schoolhouse was opened for a look. R. E. Jack attended a similar school in Bowdoinham, Maine as a child before going to Maine Wesleyan Seminary at Kents Hill, now known as Kents Hill, founded in 1824 that is still teaching high schoolers. Upcoming Events December 14 Un-Decorate the Jack House January 5 Art after Dark 2018 begins February 14 Docent’s Valentine Brunch Important! How to remove dining table leafs To remove leaves from the dining table when it has all five leaves in it takes two people gently lifting and removing leaves #2 and #4, so leaf #3 can easily be lifted and removed. The table can then be pushed together with just two leaves in place. 4-3 Page 2 of 3 National Historic Trails Interpretive Center In Casper, Wyoming I found a piece of narrative by Col. W. W. Hollister in Platte River Road Narratives. R. E. Jack learned the sheep business from Col. Hollister, Nellie’s uncle. The Colonel wrote about starting out from Ohio with “6,000 sheep and got there [California] with about 2,000. Many drowned at river crossings, but most starved for the wearing out of their feet incapacitated them to forage.” He went on to say that “The exact route” varied, as “The emigrants” were “always making new roads. . . So that in the course of a year the whole travel might be changed.” Part of what he may have been referring to was that pioneers tired of eating the dust of the wagon in front of them so they would go to their side, thus stretching the trail wide. The California Trail is the same route as the Mormon and Oregon trails from Fort Laramie in eastern Wyoming to South Pass (20 mi. wide) on the western side, nearly the width of the state of Wyoming. “Christmas Nostalgia” In keeping our focus this year on the 1920s Christmas Nostalgia brought tinsel and Christmas lights (new in 1920s) and toys of metal including a train. Two Dickens Villages, large artificial poinsettia plants and Bob Gordon’s live rose and fruit centerpiece on the dining table added color, nostalgia and tradition to the festivities. Thanks to all who planned, organized, decorated, lent items and talents, gave tours and weathered the heatless house. It was B E A U T I F U L and several guests expressed appreciation not only for everyone’s efforts for the holiday, but year-round in presenting an important part of local history. Bravo! Looking ahead Until the end of 2018 the efforts to more clearly define the roles and responsibilities of all parties connected with the Jack House will continue. A presentation by Shelly Stanwyck, Director of Parks and Recreation, warned of belt tightening. Docent’s role as tour guides and creating tour enhancements, such as Christmas Nostalgia and the trunk exhibit is within our realm. New for the docent’s may be the spearheading of Art after Dark at the Jack House on the first Friday of every month. It is on the agenda for the Dec. 13 JHC meeting. Docents are welcome! Textile Exhibit 2017 Invitations December 14 Committee member Bob Gordon has extended an invitation to all docents to his home at 1PM after we have un-decorated and had our monthly meeting. Historic Biddle House The mother and son of the historic 3 story Biddle House enjoyed Christmas Nostalgia. The 1892 Biddle house is located at 559 Pismo Street. She extended an invitation to the Jack House docents to their home as a thank you for all the docents do to preserve and present the history of the Jack family, an important role in their eyes. Date TBA Jack House Committee Kathi Settle, Toni Kincaid, Eva Fina, Chuck Crotser, Jeff Whitener, Bob Gordon, and Dorothy Sundbye. 4-4 Page 3 of 3 In November the Jack family dining table was clothed with textiles from their personal collection. Exquisite laces and hand painted pieces graced the generous sized table for ten. Lois Crotser and I put our creative talents to work (and had fun) designing this patchwork of fine textiles. It’s not hard to imagine these gorgeous pieces atop family dressers and tables in the dining room, bedrooms and parlor. The public will have another opportunity to gaze upon these and other beautiful pieces in March of 2018; docents are invited too! 2018 Board Openings 2018 Board Openings 2017 is coming to a close and 2018 is right around the corner and so it’s not too early to begin thinking about the board openings that need filling. The Scheduler is critical to our docent operations, to coordinate docent schedules with needs at the Jack House be they for weddings, special events, Sundays and special tours. This year VP Toni Kincaid and I split the year and Carol Whitaker kindly stepped in for September when both of us were not available. Team work was alive and well at the Jack House operations that’s for sure! Another post that needs filling is Docent Trainer. If we want to grow our ranks we need to train them. Guidelines are given to the Docent Trainer so they do not have to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. You all have been trained. A valuable part of training that takes place after learning about the ins and outs of opening and closing the house and each member of the Jack family is shadowing. Buddying up with experienced docents is an important learning experience. I encourage any docent who feels a little rusty or needs clarity about any part of the house to seek out an experienced docent for assistance. Touring Historic Sites Touring other historic sites provides us chances of personal & professional growth in a fun way. We learn, but we also have been able to share what we know about the Jack family! At the Dana Adobe in Nipomo we were able to connect some dots between the Dana and Jack families. The Pioneer Museum tour revealed an opportunity for the Jack Ranch and House to become a part of that museum in a new way. How about we do the Railroad museum in SLO (R. E. Jack played a significant role in bringing the railroad) or a walking tour in SLO highlighting Jack connections? I’d love to lead it. 4-5
