HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/20/2018 Item 11, Klisch Christian, Kevin From:Steve Klisch <steveklisch@gmail.com> Sent:Friday, February To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Anholm Bikeway Plan Madam Mayor and Council, I respectfully request that you consider removing the Anholm Bikeway Plan (item 11) from the consent agenda. Although my son and I were not in attendance at the last City Council meeting, our family was represented by my wife and daughter. I watched the discussion live at home, and I was surprised and disappointed by the outcome. Although I have regularly bicycled in this area between my home (north of Foothill Boulevard) and downtown over the past 18 years, I am always afraid of being struck by speeding and/or distracted drivers, especially if my children are with me. It is my impression that city staff produced evidence that many drivers are exceeding the posted speed limits in this area. Simply put, I believe that any plan that does not include either protected bike lanes or bicycle boulevards on Broad and Chorro streets will not encourage me to take more trips by bicycle with my children. As the resolution is presented, there is no timeline specified for staff to present a new approach. I request that you direct staff to move forward with the construction documents for the northern and southern sections of the project and concurrently develop planning documents for the middle section to be implemented during phase 2. I request that you direct staff to develop a new recommended plan in the upcoming months. The new plan should be in line with our planning documents, city goals, and overall safety of all roadway users. I am in favor of making a sacrifice to public street parking and vehicle circulation if that means additional safety to bicyclists and pedestrians, and has the best likelihood of attracting new cyclists. In summary, please remove the Anholm Bikeway Plan from the consent agenda and request staff to develop a timeline for a new recommended plan for the middle section of the Anholm Bikeway. Thank you, -- Steve Klisch 1
