Subject:Removal of Anholm Bikeway (item 11) from the consent agenda
Madam Mayor and Council,
I would like for you to consider removing the Anholm Bikeway (item 11) from the consent agenda. I believe the resolution does not
accurately capture your intent or recommendation to staff. During the Feb. 6th meeting, I believe your intent was to move forward on the
northern and southern sections while staff came up with a solution for the middle section that may be less contentious between some in the
neighborhood and within the bicycle and overall community. To tell you the truth, the movement passed and I was unsure on what the
steps moving forward would be. Traffic calming on Chorro? Nothing on Chorro until some unspecified time? It seemed that even among
council and staff, it was unclear on how to word the plan.
I would request that you ask staff to move forward with the construction documents for the northern and southern sections of the project
and concurrently develop planning documents for the middle section to be implemented during phase 2 to take place on a specified timeline.
The new approach should be in line with our planning documents, city goals, and overall safety of all road way users. I am in favor of making
a sacrifice to public street parking, or vehicle circulation if that means additional safety to bicycles and pedestrians, and has the best
likelihood of attracting new riders.
As I see it, the three issues to be kept top of mind are Vision Zero, 20% ridership, and Safe Routes to School. These all require drastic
changes in the way we view our streets and their purpose in serving the public. Bold changes will cause temporary discomfort for some in
order to achieve long term benefit for all.
Please remove the item from the consent agenda and request staff come up with a timeline for a new proposed plan for middle section of
the Anholm Bikeway.
Thank you,
Tim Wilkinson
