HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/20/2018 Item 11, Horstman-Chase From:Jenny Horstman < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Anholm Bikeway Plan Madam Mayor and Council, I would like you to consider removing the Anholm Bikeway (item 11) from the consent agenda. I have participated in the Bikeway planning process from its beginning through the last public comment on February 6th. So you can imagine that I was extremely disheartened by the Council’s inability to provide closure to a process that has consumed countless hours of residents’ and staffs’ time over the past year and a half. We have vetted and voted on more than five alternatives for the critical Lincoln to Ramona section, including the one-way couplet, barricade, and traffic- calming measures that several Council members suggested we consider. We came to you with an option that won 63% of votes in city-wide survey that polled hundreds of citizens. I am bewildered by what majority must be won before Council agrees that a consensus is reached. My point is that we have participated in your process, researched options and rallied support. We expected a decision for our efforts and were offered dithering and delay in exchange. As the current resolution is presented, there is no timeline specified for staff to detail a new approach for the Lincoln to Ramona section. I ask that you request staff to develop a recommended plan to be implemented during phase 2. The new approach should be in line with our planning documents, city goals, and overall safety of all road way users. As a resident of the section of Broad Street impacted by the Bikeway I am in favor of making a sacrifice to public street parking or vehicle circulation, if that means additional safety to bicycles and pedestrians and has the best likelihood of attracting new riders. Please remove the item from the consent agenda and request staff come up with a timeline for a new proposed plan for middle section of the Anholm Bikeway. Thank you, Jenny Horstman-Chase 141 Broad Street 1
