Good evening Mayor Harmon and council members,
Well, here we are again, addressing something that needs to be put to rest,
so we can all get back to more important matters, such as the reckless and
irresponsible out of control growth in our community.
I, therefore, ask that the council rescind the improper, illegal action of Feb.
th, th
20and reaffirm the action of February 6.
In the late 70s as a young mother in Oxnard, my 3 speed Schwinn was my
only car. I did not have a groovy SUV in the driveway with bike racks, and
other attachments for weekend fun.
I rode my bike, with one baby on my back and the other in a bike seat, to
run my errands. I never thought to demand special treatment as I rode
with the traffic, obeying rules of the road, while being vigilant for drivers
who were not as courteous as they should be.
I talked to the boys as we rode, about safety, and traffic rules, so that when
they started riding their bikes, and eventually driving, they would be well
on their way to being safe and considerate co-users of the roadways.
Teachable moments that seem to be lacking with this new, entitled
generation of parents.
We have been residents of the wonderful, diverse Anholm neighborhood
since 1983, I have walked my kids and grandkids, in strollers and wagons,
then my ailing husband, in a wheelchair, in the street, as our lack of
complete sidewalks, lack of ADA curbs, and minimal crosswalks gave us no
other options.
But we adapted to less than optimum conditions, and enjoyed our outings,
as difficult as it was.
So, when a small group of bicyclists demand special, expensive
consideration to pass through our neighborhood, disrupting our daily lives,
while the numerous obstacles for pedestrians still remains, I find it
appalling that you would even consider this.
Most of us will be able to take a walk, long after we are able to ride a bike,
so it seems to me that priority should be the condition of our walking
infrastructure. Our neighborhood needs repaired sidewalks, ADA curbs,
more crosswalks and better lighting, now.
