HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/10/2018 Item 2, Stafford Hello, I have become aware of two homes in my neighborhood where the landlords have applied to the city for ADU permits. I understand these requests are still pending. While I am not automatically opposed to homeowners building an ADU on their property, I am strongly opposed to a home with ADU housing up to 10 unrelated persons on the property (5 in the home, 5 in the ADU), particularly students. I understand there is a mandate that either the home or ADU must be owner occupied. Is this true? Apparently, the city of SLO has yet to adopt that mandate (?), thus allowing the above mentioned landlords a "window of opportunity" to make an end run around the mandate. I truly hope this will not be allowed to happen. I am a life-long resident of SLO, born here in 1947. My only absence was 1967 to 1970 while I served our country in the US Army, including 12 months in Vietnam. My wife and I retired 6 years ago after 53 years of local employment. My first paying job outside the home was selling newspapers on the corner of Marsh and Broad Sts. I was 11 years old. I spent the last half of my professional career (21 years) at Cal Poly as a staff technician in ITS. We moved into our dream home in Ferrini Heights 14 years ago and we could not be happier. We have invested a substantial amount of money into our home. This is our hard-earned paradise! Please do not allow the ever-creeping (“Boiling the Frog”) student rental blight to ruin our beautiful neighborhoods and quality of life. The city of Santa Cruz boldly and successfully forced their university to cap enrollment plus house 65% of the students on campus. This is the only logical solution for reducing student housing rentals in our family neighborhoods! The city of San Luis Obispo should confront Cal Poly in the same manner – the precedence has been set. The permanent residents of San Luis Obispo deserve nothing less. Sincerely, David C.
