HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/10/2018 Item 1, Lewis, Jaime From:Jaime Lewis < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:YES to the Anholm Bikeway Dear Mayor Harmon and City Council, I live at 248 Almond Street and am the mother of two school-aged children and the Safe Routes to School coordinator for Bishop's Peak Elementary School. My kids are pretty conscientious on their bikes, but I've recently told them we can no longer ride to school because it's just too scary to ride so close to cars (particularly along Broad and Ramona Streets) and it's illegal and imprudent to ride the whole way on sidewalks. Drivers just aren't careful enough without a barrier between us and their vehicles. I have total confidence in the forward-thinking leadership of our city based on its track record. Your predecessors made decisions that, though perhaps temporarily unpopular with certain pockets of residents, paved the way for the greater good of the entire San Luis Obispo community, including closing Mission Plaza to traffic, closing multiple streets each week for Farmer's Markets, and developing a bikes-first-cars-second boulevard along Morro Street. These are now jewels in the crown of our quality of life here in SLO. As such, I urge you to adopt the resolution as presented tonight and agreed upon during the Febuary 20th meeting. I believe this approach/resolution is an accurate reflection of your intent after a lengthy public comment on Feb 6th. I respect the decision to adopt the resolution in a more engaging fashion. This project has been contentious, but many of us are supportive of the decisions you have made and your willingness to tackle some of the difficult issues facing our city and environment. Moving forward on this project, we need to choose the option that best meets our city goals and is best for every road user and community member. Please adopt the resolution as presented tonight. Thank you, Jaime Lewis 1
