ELEMENTS
Consideration of Zoning Elements
Height:
If Council Members prefer to please Staff who wish to please developers,
Council members would be more suited to just belong to The Chamber. I am NOT being
disrespectful.....I promise! YOU CAN JUST CALL ME DUMB, but I think in my case it
is naive. I know people have different ideas but polls show what residents want and
I thought Council members were elected to represent residents!
Nothing I have advocated for since 2001, when others' neighborhoods opened my eyes, has
anything to do with me personally. I just like looking out for others. As a matter of fact,
many other programs would likely be more rewarding. I have worked with the Homeless
Shelter in hands-on ways. Not just a meeting or a rally. I taught homework classes and
befriended a family I transported and brought to my home for afternoon homework. There
are a number of other efforts I would like to join --Glean SLO for one--but time is, of course,
always a factor. Truthfully, my husband wants me out of here
so I do not feel drawn to helping with city matters. Advocates can't help
themselves...seriously.
BACK TO HEIGHTS: If developers can make much more money with a taller building, Council
members representing residents should say we "do not want taller buildings."
Your position if you represent residents should be developers can still make money
they should be content with profits from fewer floors if they want to build in San Luis.
Residents chose San Luis because it was not a 'big city'. If you want to make it "big"
looking with tall buildings too soon (in the current building phase), you are not helping
residents.
.
ADU's
ABSOLUTELY NOT WITHOUT OWNER OCCUPANCY.
Our neighborhoods are already looking like Isla Vista. It is a shame. Actually a sham, as
well, when our current Community Development Dept. neglectfully did not update our
ADU ordinance to 'match' the State for SIX MONTHS. (Eight if you consider they had
the wording in Oct. '16 that they knew would go into effect Jan. '17)
I can only presume you know the story, but if not, there are many members of the
community who will inform you. I like Michael Codron. If you ask him about it, you will
get an honest face, wide open eyes (forgive me, I am not being inappropriate, I think he is a
dear) but when he has to give you an answer, he has to give the 'excuse'. The real reason is
buried in City Management. He's a company guy. It is probably because the
1
City needed money. I think residents would actually be willing to pay more taxes IF
policies benefited the general population.
Also, if any Council members have not seen and experienced deteriorating neighborhoods
and residents living in degrees of chaos , I would love to do tours!
Hurting neighborhoods is not the way to get votes in re-elections AND not the way
to pass legislation on taxes!! It could be done so differently with a clear vision for
San Luis. It could be done.
AFFORDABILITY
This is what everyone wants. This is what I want. I have a house so I want it
for others.
HOWEVER....YOU ARE DELUDING THE PEOPLE YEARNING FOR THIS WHEN YOU
UTTER THE WORD--and allow lobbyists (developers--e.g. Riehl) and people who work for
developers, e.g. Robbins-Reed) continue to MISUSE the word to FOOL the public.
It is a serious shame on somebody. I just know it is not HONEST.
Here is what you want to tell people: Adding more housing (while necessary) WILL NOT
MAKE HOUSING AFFORDABLE. Here is what I suggest you think and say: "If San
Francisco added so much housing AND L.A. added so much housing.......(drum-roll)....
Why aren't they AFFORDABLE !!
Tell 'the many', San Luis Obispo will not be any more affordable. It can't happen.
Of course the ruse "affordable by design' can be cited. These will be little units that
will be fine for some (visiting businessmen, visitors who can share time here, single
workforce (there is another ruse word), but probably lots of students (you know very
well the cash cow of investors).
You know that any real estate listing will have a per square foot $price. Here is a way, you
can be completely knowledgeable/honest --state price per square foot. People can
choose what they want. Mercedes is more affordable than Ferrari. Still not affordable
for many.
Thank you very much for thoughtful consideration of all matters!
