HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/10/2018 Item 1, R Roberts April 7, 2018 L T"' ; Dear Mayor and City Council Members, I urge the council to halt the Anholm Bikeway Project. The process has been flawed from the outset. The surveys, by design, never allowed for a clear NO. No Bikeway, No loss of parking. You wouldn't hear No. The neighborhood residents and two former mayors unequivocally said Stop. Mayor Harmon opened the February 6 public comments with a verbal attack on respected former mayor Ken Schwartz's letter opposing the project and even on the Telegram Tribune's decision to print it! She then demanded civility from the public speakers before one word had been spoken, civil or otherwise. Poisoning the well at that point in the proceedings was extraordinary. I should follow form here and present my cyclist bona fides. I raised two daughters in the Anholm who attended Bishop's Peak. I know the slightly uphill ride to Bishop's Peak as well as the effortless roll back to Center St.--In other words I literally know the lay of the land. Many years ago my wife and I took a 1700 mile bike trip through the upper Midwest to Montana. The very best cycling is on an empty two lane road in the Dakotas with the wind at your back. The next best is a quiet residential neighborhood with choices of streets and where vehicles, pedestrians and bikes share the road and slow each other down, through courtesy and necessity. In other words, the Anholm neighborhood precisely as it is now! We are also cyclists enough to have gotten the bike club email today --ADVOCACY ALERT! So when members of that lobbying group say their piece in Council Chambers remember that they are not just a sliver of the community, but a sliver of the cycling community. So we have repeatedly said No and repeatedly said Stop. If you carry out this neighborhood disfigurement project you owe Ken Schwartz an apology. His phrase "urban rape"was not uncivil or inflammatory, merely precise. Respectfully, "" :.. , Ronald Ro C' b 869 Center St. San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 543-7602
