Architectural Review Commission
Dear Chairperson Root and Commissioners:
RE: Public Comment on 1135 Santa Rosa Street; non‐compliance with City guidelines and requirements
I am asking that you look into the previously approved color scheme for this drastically compromised project. It was
originally approved with modern architecture although it is located at the edge of the Downtown Historic District. The
"off‐set" rationale for this amazing accommodation to the architect was to require that the building colors be muted
and in the mid‐range of brightness, NOT in black or charcoal.
The use of black or charcoal colors on a building should be denied at this site. These colors are not visible in the vicinity,
so they are inconsistent with the Community Design Guidelines.
In general, black or charcoal is the universal color of sorrow, shame and degradation. The applicant takes pride in using
black as a dominant color, apparently as a sinister or perhaps misogynist kind of stylistic statement. It might be
endurable on a warehouse on Parker Street, but not at the edge of the historic downtown.
I am copying the City Council as information for their consideration that the color black on buildings is not acceptable in
downtown or elsewhere in San Luis Obispo.
Thank you for considering my comments.
