Subject:Laurel Lane Complete Streets - Item 2
Dear Mayor and Council,
Bike SLO County is in support of all three of the add alternatives as they will greatly increase safety for bikes and
pedestrians. We recognize there is a funding shortage that may limit your ability to complete all three add alternates. It
is BSLOC recommendation to prioritize the add alternate (A) to re-stripe with buffered bike lanes. This portion of the
project should not be delayed and can be funded with some re-allocation of funds as presented by staff. If funding from
these other sources can cover the cost for one of the bulb-outs we mimic staffs recommendation to prioritize the
intersection of Southwood (Add Alt B).0 This intersection sees many children and commuters on their route to/from
school, work, the park, pool, or bike path and would greatly benefit from shorter roadway crossings.
With limited funding, we suggest looking at less costly methods for the crossing bulb-outs such as using paint and rubber
bollards, rubber curbs, and/or bot dots for a temporary intersection improvement. This may allow for the intersection to
be designed with the future construction sidewalk extensions and green features, but allows the city to add these safety
features now at a lower cost.
Thank you
