Good afternoon Council Members and Mayor,
As a Johnson Avenue resident who frequently walks, runs and rides my bike on Laurel Lane, and across Laurel
on Southwood, I encourage you to vote tonight in support of Alternative A and B proposed by City Staff on this
corridor. As Laurel Lane is currently on schedule to be re-paved and slurry-sealed, this is the perfect time to
repaint, and provide more safety measures on the intersections, in particular at Southwood and Augusta. As
you know, Sinsheimer Elementary is located between these two intersections, and the frequency of young
children crossing there is high. Further, the intersection at Laurel and Southwood has been shown, by City
Staff to be one of the most dangerous in our community, and therefore warrants our special attention at this
opportune time.
I attended both community meetings on these proposed alternatives. At these meetings, there was wide
community support for EVEN GREATER improvements than the modest ones proposed in the alternatives
coming before you tonight. Many residents who have been hit by cars on Laurel, or observed others being hit,
voiced interest in flashing lights, round-a-bouts and a variety of other improvements in addition to the bulb
outs and re-painting proposed in Alternatives A-C tonight.
While I would LOVE to see even more done on Laurel than what City Staff have proposed, I also understand
the costs and feel that what City Staff has proposed in Alternatives A&B will do the most good, protecting and
improving the highest risk intersection on that corridor, while also reducing collision points along the whole
road (by going from 4 lanes and 8 collision points, down to 2 lanes and 4 collision points). Please approve at
minimum, alternatives A&B tonight.
Thank you!
