Jennifer and Advisory Bodies, I can't
imagine that anybody thought that removing parking from Laurel Lane was a good
idea. We already have a congested parking problem on Laurel Lane. Why? For starters,
the city required Sydney Creek to build a nice beautiful parking lot, but not big enough.
Their employees have to park on the street. Not only do they take up all of the available
street parking, but they sometimes park in our 3 space parking lot, in the 30 minutes
zones, and before it went under construction, they would park in the shopping center
parking lot across the street, and face being towed. Even with that, some of their
employees have to walk a couple of blocks, sometimes in the rain, to get to work.
Ending parking on our side of the street would cause patients at Healing Alternatives, in
my building, many of whom walk with canes and walkers, to have to park across the
street. My tenants have already told me that they would have to move their business
rather endure that problem. Many of my customers would have no where to park, as all
parking spots across the street would be occupied by Sydney Creek employees who will
park there all day, while they are at work.
Keeping the parking and placing the bike lanes on the curb would still create the
problem for patients with difficult walking problems as they navigate and try to step up
onto the curb. If you move forward with any plan that removes parking, expect business
owners here to organize against it's implementation. Unless you want to build a parking
garage where the Community Garden is now. That would help make up for our parking
deficiency.
Meanwhile, on a 24 hour basis, we average about one bicyclist an hour.

Hello,
On May 1st the City Council approved the reconfiguration of Laurel Lane to one lane in each direction with a center left
turn lane, parking lanes, and buffered bike lanes. This approval also included pedestrian crossing enhancements at
Southwood & Augusta. As part of that action, however, the Council directed staff to evaluate and return with
consideration of one-way cycle tracks putting the bicycle lane between the parking lane and the curb.
Cycle tracks have the benefit of providing a dedicated and protected space for bicyclists as well as eliminating risk and
fear of collisions with over-taking automobiles.
In order to accommodate the cycle tracks to meet recommended clearances, however, on street parking would need to be
removed from one side of Laurel (the north side). Additional on street parking would need to be removed on the south
side near driveways to provide adequate sight lines.
The City would like input from the community on this new component of the project. The Active Transportation Committee
will be reviewing and discussing three options for Laurel Lane at their May 17th meeting, 6 PM at City Hall.
Option A: Install cycle tracks and maintain on-street parking. (To accommodate this option, the cycle tracks would be less
than the recommended clearance widths.)
Option B: Install cycle tracks and remove on-street parking to meet recommended clearances for the cycle tracks.
Option C: Install the buffered bike lanes as originally proposed for the project (no cycle tracks)
(See attached for cross sections)
You are encouraged to attend this meeting (or send written comments to advisorybodies@slocity.org).
Thank you,

Existing Conditions
Council Approved Section (& Option C with originally planned buffered bike lanes)
This section is what was recommended and presented to the City Council at the May 1st Council Meeting. While the
City Council approved the design, they concurrently asked that staff evaluate modifying the parking and bike lane
section to a “cycle track” which would swap the parking and bike lane. This is still a viable option (Option C).
Option A: Install cycle tracks and maintain on‐street parking
Cycle track provides protected space for bicyclists, however is less than the recommended width for these types
of facilities. On street parking is maintained. Motor vehicle travel lanes are at the very minimum (10’).
Option B: Install cycle tracks and remove on‐street parking
Cycle track provides protected space for bicyclists. On‐street parking is removed.
