I am a local mechanical engineer and Poly lecturer, focused mostly on energy efficiency and clean energy technology. Regarding the City ordinance drafted to cover cannabis production, sales, and so on, I noticed this statement: 1. All indoor cannabis cultivation shall be designed to accomplish zero net energy use from the start of the operation. This will likely be a very difficult goal to accomplish. Indoor growing operations use enormous amounts of electrical energy—as much as 20–50X what could be generated with rooftop solar panels. I am a proponent of energy efficiency, renewable energy, zero-energy buildings, and even legalized cannabis, and I have no particular agenda in pointing this out. It’s just a “reality check” on the achievability of this particular goal. I am available to discuss further if this would be of help.
