Subject:Anholm Bikeway Plan - 2018-5-17 Agenda Item 2
Dear Active Transportation Committee Members,
As residents of the Anholm neighborhood and daily users of the Anholm corridor we would like to encourage
you to recommend a plan with protected bicycle facilities for the Anholm Bikeway Plan. Based on the
community design charette last week, it was clear that many people in the Anholm neighborhood have
concerns about traffic diverters unequally impacting streets by increasing traffic. Without proper diversion we
will not be able to achieve the speeds and traffic volumes that would effectively make a Class III shared street
a friendly Bicycle Boulevard that would attract new riders. Therefore, we believe you should move to the
alternative directive by City Council to proceed with a plan that includes protected bicycle lanes. The city staff
has presented two alternatives that provide protected bike lanes 1) One-Way Couplets; and 2)”Preferred
Alternative” with removal of on-street parking. We trust that you will work with staff to recommend the best
option.
Some things we would like you to keep in mind to support a protected bike lane alternative:
1. Capture the “desire” lines being taking by current users and make them safer
o Safe Routes to School and access to the northern Foothill neighborhoods preferred route is
Chorro-Mission-Broad OR the Almond Street “wiggle”
o Cal Poly students preferred route is Chorro-Murray-Casa-Foothill OR Chorro-Foothill, which
would capture new residential at Chorro and Foothill and the shopping center
2. Protected bike lanes are safest when provided on each side of the street matching the direction of
travel, without contra flow movement. However, if the space constraints make this infeasible two-way
cycle tracks may be preferred over no protected bike lanes
3. Research shows that protected bike lanes have the greatest potential to increase ridership.
We represent the voice of the Anholm neighbors and surrounding areas who would like to see a significant
change to create "complete streets." Thank you for your consideration and for your continued service as a
committee member promoting infrastructure to further our City’s goals and plans.
Sincerely,
Jesse Englert representing SLO Streets for All
