Ms Rice,
I am emailing to provide my support for the staff’s recommendation to promote the traditional bike lanes instead of the
cycle tracks. I am a regular and avid cyclist. I attended the May 1 ACT meeting and I and all the cyclists and motorist that
I recall hearing at that meeting spoke in favor of the traditional cycle lanes. I am quite certain that the cycle tracks which
are created by having cars parked to the left of the cyclists provide a false sense of security for the cyclist. The hidden
dangers are that car passengers will open doors and step out in front of cyclists who are only cycle track, and the cyclist
will have no escape route to avoid the person or the car door suddenly thrust in front of them. The ACT members who
were in favor of the cycle track ignored this very pertinent fact and pushed very hard for the cycle track. I am quite
relieved to hear that city staff will be recommending a traditional bike lane. Please feel free to share my email if you see
fit.
Sincerely,
Donette Dunaway
