Subject: RE: June 19: Council to make final decision on Laurel Lane Protected Bike Lanes
Jennifer,
Thank you for sending this. I plan to attend the Council meeting on behalf of Andre, Morris & Buttery, but following are
comments that may be passed along to the Council.
We do not support the ATC recommendations. Here is why:
1. Placing the parked cars outside of the bike lane reduces the line of site for vehicles entering and exiting
driveways. To accommodate this design there would have to be a reduction in parked cars. Parking is an
important element of the initial design.
2. Vehicles turning into the Morris & Garritano parking lot will have greater difficulty seeing bicycles because
the bicycles will be partially obscured by parked cars.
3. Bicyclists who spoke at the ATC hearing expressed concern regarding the ATC recommended design because
there is limited space to swerve and avoid opened doors. Also the junction of concrete curbs and asphalt
streets can be dangerously rough.
4. Disabled persons will have greater difficulty getting to and from a parked car and the sidewalk because of
the intervening bike lane.
5. There is not a demonstrated benefit to bicycling.
Thank you.
