Subject:Affordable Housing San Luis Ranch
Dear Mayor Harmon & Councilmembers,
My name is Nadine Gentry, I was born and raised in Paso Robles in 1963. My parents still live in Paso
Robles, my mother worked for the post office for over 35 years in Paso Robles, I have lived in San Luis
Obispo County all of my life. I own and manage a local insurance agency in Atascadero , I have been in
business for the past 18 years. I raised my son here in SLO County, he attended Cal Poly and graduated
in 2016 with a Bachelors degree in Sociology.
Back in 2006 when the real estate crash happened it adversely affected the company that I was working
for. I lost 50% of my income at that time, as a result I lost my home that I owned in Pismo Beach. Since
then I have worked hard to build my business back up to make a decent living. I was also committed to
helping my son with his college expenses so he could have a better chance at securing a good career and
still be able to live on the Central Coast after college. Now that he has graduated I am in a better position
financially, however the housing prices have skyrocketed to the point that there is no possible way that
either he or I can afford to buy a home. And for that matter rents are out of control as well, we are both
in jeopardy of not being able to afford to live here at all.
My adjusted gross income is right around $55,000, I need to be able to pay my home off in 15 years to
retire at 72 years old. What I can afford within those perimeters is a $250,000 mortgage.
The affordable and workforce housing seems to be my only chance at being able to stay in SLO County. I
feel that since I have lived here all of my life, raised my son here, and I am a part of this community, I
should be able to afford to live here and so should my son when he is ready to buy a home.
We need these programs and so do many others that are working hard but we are not not making enough
money to live here.
Respectfully,
1
Nadine Gentry
