To the San Luis City Council,
Your approval of this project means a lot to the hard-working professional people who serve the community of San Luis
Obispo.
I am a well-paid ICU nurse at French Hospital Medical Center where I specialize in cardiac care and cardiothoracic
surgery. I am also a mother of 2 children, ages 3 and 8. I currently rent a townhouse in San Luis Obispo, where the rent
is going up and up every year. We love living in this city, where my kids go to school and have friends. We love bike
riding downtown, and I love running, hiking and mountain biking in the abundant open space we have.
I want very much to raise my children here, close to their family and friends, and close to their father, who is a public
servant working for the County, and who is very involved in their lives. However, due to the cost of housing, I
cannot afford to buy a home here, and with my rent climbing every year and housing costs skyrocketing I feel
forced to consider leaving the area.
It breaks my heart, also, that my children love animals and desperately want to have a dog or a cat, and I want that for
them, but it seems that in San Luis Obispo almost all of the rentals insist "no pets". I cant tell you how many times my
kids have asked me when they can have a dog or a cat, and I've told them "when we can have our own home." More
than almost anything I want a home for my children, with a real childhood and a dog. Earning what I do it is frustrating
that I feel the simple life I want for my family is becoming unattainable here.
Projects like the one being proposed for San Luis Ranch might be a lifeline for families like mine, that will allow highly
skilled professionals and public servants to stay here, in the community they love and serve.
I hope you will approve this project, and that maybe something like this will allow us to stay.
