Item #4 Dear Commissioners, The first time I caught a glimpse of 1135 Santa Rosa, my mouth dropped, and I muttered "What is this ugly dark and bulky thing?" Since then, I have met numerous residents who had exactly the same reaction. We may not know a great deal about architecture, but we know when something stands out like a sore thumb. This building is breaking many of the rules established by City guidelines for color, size, and harmony with its surroundings, and the owner should have been fined for doing it. Instead, the Staff, after much whining, is ignoring all the established rules, and recommending its approval. If you go along with the Staff, you are creating a precedent, and de facto telling owners, architects and developers that City guidelines are just a joke, and they can do whatever they please in our city. I hope it is not what you intend to do. Therefore, please send the right message to owners who think they can impose their own sense (or nonsense) of esthetics upon San Luis Obispo, and demand that this building be at least repainted in the muted color that had first been approved. By doing so, you will not only improve the appearance of this building, you will also make the statement that guidelines are not jokes, and people who don't want to follow our guidelines will pay the consequences. Sincerely, Odile Ayral 1
