Dear Mayor Harmon & Councilmembers,
Hello, my name is Matt Nguyen and have been a San Luis Obispo resident since 1998, moving from San Jose to attend
Cal Poly. Like many, I fell in love with the area and wanted to make it home upon graduating. I knew I had to sacrifice a
number of things in order to make things work to make San Luis Obispo home. Whether that was taking considerably
less in pay or having roommates through my entire residence in San Luis Obispo, I tried to make things works. As the
years have gone on, the ability to live in San Luis Obispo has become incredibly more difficult.
More and more, I have seen friends move on from San Luis Obispo because supporting a family here become difficult
due to cost of housing compared to average San Luis Obispo salary. They all love San Luis Obispo, however, financially,
the numbers would not make sense. For myself, I ended up having to find a job in Silicon Valley that allows me to work
remotely and continue to work in SLO. I feel like I am one of the lucky ones to able to pull this off, unfortunately, even
on a Silicon Valley salary, purchasing a home is difficult in San Luis Obispo. If it were not for this job, I probably would
have moved away from San Luis Obispo.
It is no surprise that we have a housing issue in San Luis Obispo and it has been an issue for quite some time. The
debates have gone on for over the last decade with no real resolutions. The longer we delay, the more expensive
projects are going to become. The exodus of residents and businesses are evident and real. People who have made San
Luis Obispo home 10-20 years are leaving. Having projects like San Luis Ranch, though will not solve the problem, will
help take the city and county in the right step of keeping people who love SLO in SLO.
Please do not delay San Luis Ranch any longer. I urge you to approve the changes and allow San Luis Ranch to move
forward. Dreams of your residents are dependent on this project. Help your residents fulfill those dreams, it is in your
hands.
Thank You,
Matt Nguyen
