Dear Mayor Harmon and Council Members,
I have been a member of this community since I came to school here 18 years ago. I fell in love with SLO and was
excited to accept full time employment in the early childhood education field upon graduation from Cal Poly's
psychology and child development department.
Recently, being a single, young professional, in her 30s who made above minimum wage, teaching preschool at Cal Poly,
I was still only able to find affordable housing with other young professionals, renting a room in a house. I now live with
a partner who has a works for Cal Trans, here in SLO. We were going to move to north county, but lucked out and were
able to secure a house to rent in SLO, ONLY because I still know the landlords, and I lived in the house 15 years ago
during college.
When we're ready to buy, the way housing is right now in SLO (minimal availability and ridiculously high-priced), we will
be looking at north county unless something changes. My partner and I work hard for this community and would love to
stay here if we can. That is why I am urging the council to approve the San Luis Ranch housing project. SLO needs more
housing, period, in order to keep the workforce local and off the already congested highway.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Kari Applegate, MEd
