Subject:Approval of the EIR for the Palm/Nipomo, Mission Plaza Parking Structure
Honorable Mayor Harmon and Council Members,
As a downtown business and property owner and former chair of the Downtown Association’s Parking and Access
Committee, I have long followed the issue of the Palm/Nipomo Parking Structure. When we look at the options for
parking for our community members and visitors to downtown San Luis Obispo, this is the long determined best location
for our next parking structure.
Building a garage is a long process. The EIR is needed as a next step. The historical nature of the homes to be removed is
planned to be assessed as part of that process. There will always be downsides to parking garages, but there are also
upsides such as increased customers and visitors to downtown. Our farmer’s market is a real peak and parking is always
scare at the peak, which is one of the most important times. We cannot expect most visitors to use alternate
transportation for the foreseeable future. We need to keep downtown vibrant and provide access.
Please approve the EIR.
Thank you,
Amy
