Subject:RE: Anholm Bikeway
Dear Council Members:
I live on Almond Street in the Anholm district. I originally stated on my mailed survey that I was in
favor of changes in my neighborhood for the bicycle corridor. I have changed my mind. There are a
number of reasons why:
I am by no means a regular bicycle rider but when I do ride, it is generally on Chorro Street riding
toward downtown. I have never felt in more danger on Chorro Street than any other SLO street, large or
small.
Mine is a neighborhood full of families. I do not believe that additional traffic should be funneled onto
Chorro Street splitting the neighborhood in half and making it more dangerous for pedestrians to cross
from one side of Chorro to the other.
We have large developments both in the planning stage and in construction that will already impact the
traffic in my neighborhood.
I believe that increased traffic on Chorro will also lead to increased traffic on the Lincoln loop.
The best thing that can be done for Chorro, and our neighborhood in general, is to implement traffic
calming devises on both Chorro and Lincoln to slow traffic.
Though I use the Broad Street freeway entrance every day to go to work, I think a temporary closure of
both the on and off ramps at Broad should be explored with CalTrans to determine the impact of
closure.
Lastly, there are many other places in town that bike money could be spent to greater benefit.
My neighborhood is very special with lots of children. Changes to proposed traffic patterns will greatly
impact our family friendly neighborhood. I would like you to consider the phrase, “If it’s not broke don’t
fix it”.
Thank you for your attention,
Kerry Smith
