Mayor Harmon and councilmembers,
I hope you all had time to read Allan Cooper’s thorough letters to you.
I ditto everything he said, and as he suggested, I ask you to continue this discussion
and decision. It’s just too important to act impulsively.
As I suggested to the planning commission last week, changing the general plan, by
reclassifying streets, to fit staff’s proposal, vs. staff’s proposal fitting the existing
general plan is crazy. And, the same goes with zoning standards. If developers know
that the maximum heights and density limits were a done deal, we wouldn’t have to try
to reinvent the wheel every time a new development is proposed.
Maybe that’s simplifying matters, and it’s all so much for anyone to understand. But, I
am in awe with the depth of history and knowledge that Alan Cooper brings to the
table. Not from any political agenda, but for simple love of this community. I think we’d
be wise to take his advice very seriously, and this is the very reason that the decision
process should not be fast tracked, streamlined or simplified.
Public opinion is democracy.
You may not always want to listen to us, but you have to, at least, hear us.
You know, mayors and city council members come and go. Paid staff come and go.
Even the public will come and go. But huge buildings are here to stay. You can’t just say
“oops, maybe that was a mistake.”

In closing, your very legacy is at stake. Is the approval of 75 foot tall buildings, and the
very destruction of our beloved San Luis Obispo really how you want to be
remembered?
Please do what is right…
