Subject:Zoning for schools and school expansion
Dear Mayor Harmon and Council,
As you work through the issues surrounding updating zoning, I ask you to remember the predicament facing schools,
specifically San Luis Obispo Classical Academy (SLOCA), a non-profit K-12 school serving ~400 students.
SLOCA has leased the old Pacheco campus from SLCUSD for more than 10 years, but our time at that location is running
out. Due to complications with zoning (as described in previous communication from our Visionary Director and Board),
there is literally no place in the City of SLO for our school to relocate to. This presents an urgent need for updated zoning
to support the needs of our students, and their families.
SLOCA’s student population continues to grow year after year, and with uncertainty surrounding funding for SLCUSD, I
only anticipate the demand for our K-12 school will continue to grow. Now is the opportune time to ensure that valuable
institutions like ours aren’t forced out of the city of SLO, due to zoning constraints.
Please find a way to make room for schools in the City of SLO.
Thank you,
Melissa
