Subject: tiny houses
Dear Doug,
I am not much on politics. However, going through a sub‐development, I was hopeful to provide my opinion
for your consideration on what I read about the tiny houses being sent back to the planning department for
further refinement. Is this something I send to you, or should I send to city council? I am clueless to these
things.
With the balance between public want on housing size, as well as feasibility, I would suggest this. I would
make the tiny houses conform to some sort of vehicle code for size, both width and height. Tiny houses are
on wheels, are relatively temporary in idea and design, as they are designed to be mobile, and not attached to
a foundation. Thus, they are designed to be moved on a trailer/as is. The city could then design a size
requirement while also maintaining that the tiny home still conforms to certain vehicle codes to be trailered
based upon size, as they are designed to be transient.
Discussion/opinion.... I could imagine that without any sort of regulation on this, that a tiny home may want to
have a building addition done, making it larger in size, etc. This would create some potential issues, as part of
the structure would be more like the mobile tiny home, and the addition likely would require a foundation
which would make the addition more like an accessory dwelling unit. Without any clarification on remodeling
and additions to a tiny home, the potential for hodge‐podge aspects of these tiny homes may exist creating
issues and confusion.
While I have no desire to do a tiny home, I was hopeful to provide my opinion to see if this may or may not
help your process. I just don't know if this is something I should send to city counsel, or others, as I really try
to avoid politics.
Any insight and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Donnie
