Subject:In support of Protected Bike Lanes
August 29, 2018
Dear City Council,
I support protected bike lanes because I have always wanted to be able to bike with my kids from our neighborhood
near Bishops Peak to the library without worrying about car traffic, but I have always driven them instead. I know
that my car uses a fossil fuel, and I also prefer my kids to bike than for me to act like their chauffeur. But these have
always been outweighed by the risk and unpleasantness of bicycling right next to cars.
I support protected bike lanes because I want to feel safe, and I want my kids to feel safe, when we bike.
I support protected bike lanes because I’d like to see San Luis Obispo become more bike-friendly. I don’t expect
bicycles to replace cars, I need my car, but our city is bike-unfriendly enough that biking is often not a good option,
especially for kids.
I support protected bike lanes because I know that the population of San Luis Obispo will continue to grow, and I
would prefer that the people who are part of this growth NOT just drive themselves around town and create more
traffic, but feel comfortable biking around town instead.
I support protected bike lanes because I would like to continue to see San Luis Obispo as among the most forward-
thinking cities in dealing with challenges related to population increases, greenhouse gas emissions, and community
health.
I support protected bike lanes because I am a resident of San Luis Obispo, work in San Luis Obispo, and have
children growing up here. I care about this city and its future, and maybe someday my children will decide to settle
here themselves.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Tseng
