Subject:I Support Protected Bike Lanes
Dear Mayor and Council,
I have been a resident of SLO since 1997, and prior to that attended Cal Poly from 1988-1992. I have seen the face of this
community grow in both positive and negative ways. One that that I am confident in, however, is that SLO has been and
should continue to be progressive in measures that promote health and well-being for all her residents. I have not
always taken very good care of my health, but am doing my best to make a difference, especially now that I am getting
older. I ride my bike from the Laguna Village area to Cal Poly where I work. I ride up Madonna, through downtown, and
along Chorro. It can be scary. I pray that the benefits to my heart, mind, and carbon reduction for the planet aren't going
to be jeopardized by a car sideswiping me, or a door suddenly taking me down.
I want to express my support for the Anholm bikeway plan that includes protected bike lanes. As staff have stated
during several previous meetings, protected bike lanes are the most likely to attract more people to ride their bike. As a
community we have made it a priority to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicle trips and give our community
the opportunity to make healthier transportation choices. There is a plethora of reasons why more people biking
benefits our community and environment. For a century our streets we designed only to accommodate cars which has
led to some serious environmental and health impacts that need to be addressed sooner rather than later. I want to
help make the shift for the greater good of our community and hope you will make the tough to decision to rethink the
way we utilize our public right of ways.
Sincerely,
Andrew Schaffner
