Subject:Support Of Anholm bikeway protected bike lanes
Hello,
As a local parent of two young riders, a homeowner in SLO, and an avid cyclist, it pains me to hear more and
more frequently of people abandoning cycling as a viable transportation alternative due to the safety risks associated
with distracted drivers. For a century we have built our infrastructure to force people into cars, and now it is
understandable that switching that direction is a challenge. However, I believe that it is a challenge that we must face
for the good of our residents, youth, and SLO’s future.
I support dedicated cycle tracks wherever possible, and an increase in efforts to protect alternative
transportation methods at any cost, both downtown, in residential areas, and in areas of high commuting traffic like
broad street, Higuera street, and tank farm.
I live in Serra Meadows and work near the Airport, and I do not bike to work for one reason: that every single
day I commute by car and watch distracted drivers intruding into the bike lane on Tank Farm at high speed. To regularly
bike-commute on tank farm is currently tantamount to suicide. I know that we are not discussing that thoroughfare, but
if building enhanced safety in areas like the proposed Anholm Bikeway helps steer our infrastructure planning toward
bike safety in general, then I am wholeheartedly for it.
Please hear my voice and help make SLO’s streets safer for bikes.
Cheers,
Ben Potter
