Subject:Anholm Bikeway Protected Bike Lanes
Dear Mayor and Council,
I want to express my support for the Anholm Bikeway plan that includes protected bike
lanes. As city staff have stated during several previous meetings, protected bike lanes are
the most likely to attract more people to ride their bike.
As a resident and homeowner in SLO City for more than three decades, I have seen how
our city has changed. As the cliche goes -- change is challenging. While many might point
to buildings and developments as the obvious changes we can see, one of the biggest
changes that I've recently noticed is a change in the how residents treat each other. As
someone who is a daily bicycle commuter and is also recreational cyclist, I've noticed the
exceedingly disregard that people driving in cars have for fellow community members. I
used to feel safe on our roads as members of our community seemed to respect and care
for each others' safety. Now I don't feel safe as some car drivers seem to feel it is their
right to use their phone, drive under the influence, speed, ignore the rules of the road or
simply harass people riding bikes or walking. These are all actions that eclipse and
disregard the safety of others on the road. This seeming inability by some car drivers to
make good, safe and caring choices, leads to the conclusion that we need protected bike
lanes for those of us that want to ride or walk. And, we want more people walking and
riding bikes as that will benefit our community and our environment.
I hope you will make the tough to decision to rethink the way we utilize our public right of
ways and support protected bike lanes.
Sincerely,
Chris McBride
