Subject:safer streets
Our SLO family of 4 regularly uses many forms of transportation: car, bus, bike, walk. It is imperative that the city
prioritize safer streets by incorporating more bike-friendly streets and paths including designated and protected bike
paths and sidewalks. We are raising 2 teens. When they were children, we literally had to teach them to leap out of the
way of cars as we lived in a neighborhood with no sidewalks. Further, teaching bike safety was not going to save their
lives. We had to physically protect them from irresponsible cars. This is unacceptable. I know our community has many
(misguided) individuals who are particularly concerned with their right to drive and right to park their car. Given the
choice between dead/injured pedestrians/cyclists, I simply refuse to concede the perspective that safer bike lanes and
sidewalks infringes on drivers. Further, there are myriad other reasons to foster safer streets to encourage biking and
walking: pollution, quality of life, benefits of supporting active lifestyle, sense of community.
