Subject:Anholm Bikeway
Dear SLO City Council,
I'm sending this email to weigh in on the Anholm Bikeway, which I am in support of. I personally do not cycle commute
or ride in SLO anymore because it's hard to find a good, safe route through town, especially when having to cross the
101, major roads, or the train tracks.
I used to live in Tucson, AZ and Irvine, CA, and I felt less threatened riding my bike in those places compared to SLO,
despite those communities being at least 10 times larger in population. SLO is not a safe city for cylists. Tucson, AZ was
the best place I lived for bike commuting, where the city planned bike lanes and class 1 bike trails that make it safe and
doable to bike commute and get to any place in the city by bike. When I lived in Tucson, I rode more miles per year than
I drove my car. In SLO, I walk or drive only, after several near misses and being run off the road. I don't feel safe riding
across town. One of the main problem is that the bike paths and bike lanes are not continuous. Bike lanes might exist for
part of your trip, but several times as a cyclist you have to merge into the lane with cars. Even if the street is labeled in
such a way where bikes can take the whole lane (bike boulevarde), that's not realistic when a big bus or car is right
behind you.
I completely understand that this is a complex and challenging decision. This is an issue, however, that will only become
more difficult, if the issue is pushed into the future. Please take action now to create a more bike friendly city. The city is
growing and will continue to grow, and building infrastructure today for alternative transportation will help us grow
responsibilty and intelligently into the future.
Sincerely,
Stan Yoshinobu
