It has become evident that there is very little support among City residents, whether they reside in the Anholm area or elsewhere, for traffic diverters primarily because of the projected impacts on traffic flow in the neighborhood. Therefore, we believe you should choose to proceed with a plan that includes protected bike lanes. Some things we would like you to keep in mind to support a protected bike lane alternative: 1. Research shows that protected bike lanes have the greatest potential to increase ridership. 2. As evidenced by our list of supporters, we believe that the widespread community support for protected bike lanes has been under-represented; our supporters are mostly young, working families with children and time constraints that make it difficult to attend every public meeting, become engaged, remain updated, and to express their support. 3. Its important to capture the “desire” lines being taken by current children, students, parents, professionals, and citizen and make them safer. 4. Many of our supporters do not currently ride bikes and would like to, and many see the benefits to having healthier transportation choices available to everyone. 5. As shown many times by City staff, traffic calming only will not create a safe shared street environment and will not attract new riders. We represent the voice of the Anholm neighbors and other residents of San Luis Obispo who would like to see a significant, meaningful change to create "complete streets." Thank you for your consideration and for your continued service on this city promoting infrastructure to further our City’s goals and plans. Stats of supporters of protected bike lanes and safer sidewalks: Total SLO Residents: 509 Total Anholm Residents: 83 Total Neighborhood 1 (between downtown and northern Foothill) Resident: 193 About SLO Streets for All: We are a group of Anholm and neighboring residents who want to see our public street reflect our public values. We are here to say that, as a community, we stand strong behind our values to be more inclusive of all residents and to protect our environment. In our spare time between going to work, taking our kids to school or practice, and raising our families we reached out to our neighbors and members of the community to see what their thoughts were. Many of our supporters even came to us to pledge their support for our goal to see more protected bike lanes and safer sidewalks. We heard over and over the number of people that do not feel comfortable riding their bikes or sending their kids out into the streets. We also heard of struggles to maneuver along discontinuous sidewalk and lack of ramps from moms pushing strollers or elderly people with mobility issues. Sadly, we have even heard from more than one resident who lost their spouses when they 1 were struck by cars while riding their bikes. We believe we cannot delay any longer on making our streets safer for all roadway users.
