As city staff have stated during several previous meetings, protected bike lanes are the most likely to attract more people to ride their bike. As a community we have made it a priority to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicle trips and give our community the opportunity to make healthier transportation choices. For over a decade I was a bike commuter in both Portland and Eugene, Oregon. While those cities had much more challenging weather, the public infrastructure supporting bike transportation made multi modal transportation not only possible but rewarding and enjoyable. The rain, snow, sleet and ice were mere inconveniences compared to the real challenges of dodging traffic while riding a bike in San Luis Obispo. As an architect and urban planner, it is rewarding to travel around the country and see amazing examples of communities embracing multi-modal transportation and to see the success of bicycle commuting in these communities. I was in Bend Oregon last week and was inspired to see the incredible network of various bike paths throughout the entire City and the number of cyclists, runners, walkers, skaters sharing the road with cars. This can be done in San Luis Obispo and it will benefit the entire community. I strongly urge you to support streets for ALL commuters, not just those in cars. The inconvenience of some residents losing street parking pales in comparison to the fear bicyclists face when taking to the streets. This is particularly true with regard to the kids in our community. Please stand up for multi-modal transportation and do not be swayed by the vocal minority who fight every form of change in our community. Change can be positive and I believe the Anholm Bikeway is a good start. Sincerely, JD Right-click or tap and hold here to download pictures.
