Subject:Anholm Bikeway Item 15
Dear Mayor and City Council Members:
Honestly I have no idea why I'm writing this correspondence. I'm acutely aware that as decision makers you've most likely
come to a determination already regarding the Anholm Bikeway.
What I'd really like from the each of you is to be as honest and as detailed as possible as to your reasons for supporting
your decision. I think it is of the utmost importance for the community to know exactly why you've come to your decision. I
know that at every level of government elected officials like to "straddle the fence" on why they did or didn't support a
particular issue.
If your decision is based on climate change, which I fully believe is caused by manmade activity, and this is part of the
City's Climate Action Plan. I want to hear that. If your decision is based on the belief that neighborhood residents should
expect that street parking out in front of their homes can be taken away at anytime by a City Council. I want to hear that. If
your decision is based on the belief that this community is going to be forced into alternative transportation by eliminating
or reducing parking availability then come out and say it clearly and loudly. (Although building a new parking structure
seems to be against this philosophy)
I also want to hear that you fully understand that removing street parking from a neighborhood is going to really impact
residents along those streets I want to hear that. You may believe that this if for the greater good but I want you to
acknowledge you've severely impacted those residents and to do more than just thank them for their sacrifice. I also want
to hear you say to City residents that if you live along a street that is a school route that you should be prepared to lose
parking on one side or both sides of your street to make way for dedicated bicycle lanes.
I also want to hear you say why the Lincoln St, West Street alternative route isn't preferable because it's too out of the
way or interestingly enough isn't some super duper fancy bike track that the City can spend a million dollars on.
There was that classic line in the movie, "A Few Good Men" where Colonel Jessup (played by Jack Nicholson) is being
questioned by Lt. Daniel Kaffee (played by Tom Cruise).
Jessep (Jack Nicholson): You want answers?
Kaffee (Tom Cruise): I think I’m entitled to them.
Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee: I want the truth!
Jessep: You can’t handle the truth! Son,
I want to hear the truth.
Sincerely,
Brett Cross
