Subject: Bike paths
Hello-
I have been along on this “ride” from the beginning. Attending the community meetings and listening to input from
various groups and individuals. I would like to see this area safer for pedestrians, joggers, bikes and people young and
old. Traffic calming has been needed in the area for years. A majority of people passing through are just in a rush to get
on and off the 101.
There are so many places in our town that are scary for bikes. I would say from experience that the segment that has
been concentrated on is not a bike safety priority. There have been no recorded bike versus automobile incidents in the
area.
Why have we not concentrated on finishing the railroad bike path that just a few years got funding that bike enthusiasts
were calling “the holy grail”.
That being said I know how much time, money and energy has been spent on this segment. When people hear
“protected bike lane” I imagine they think of this as safe biking. However, the protected bike lanes staff has
recommended on Broad and Ramona will make it more dangerous because of the multiple narrow driveways and the
entrance to the shopping center.
I think a resolution is close, but we are not quite there yet. There are some great, safe ideas being presented and I
would hope all of you and staff would give them a chance. I would urge that any decisions be postponed a bit longer as
we put together a plan that would truly be safe and sane for everyone involved.
Thank you,
Connie Bruton
