HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/4/2018 Item 15, Hafemeister, G From:gina Hafemeister < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:CC Meeting 9-4-18 Mayor Harmon and City Council. My name is Gina Hafemeister and I live on Serrano Drive in San Luis Obispo. I commend the council, staff and other committees for their diligence in trying to find an acceptable and safe solution to the perceived problems for bicyclists on Broad and Chorro, while maintaining the safety and quality of life of the Anholm residents. Therefore I ask that you carefully study the proposed two way cycle tracks. It is asking a great deal of drivers to maneuver across three lanes of traffic to make a left hand turn into their driveway, or conversely to exit from their driveway, checking for bikes from the right, then bikes from the left, then cars from the right , then cars from the left. According to the CA DriversManual, when approaching a turn, the manual instructs the driver to look right, left, right, or left, right, left, before proceeding. Imagine doing this for three lanes of traffic, each going in an opposite direction, so contrary to what drivers are used to doing. Add to this head swirling activity the procedure they will employ when they are backing out of their driveway, I think we could have a multitude of accidents waiting to happen, as did happen in Columbus, OHIO. The fact is that in Columbus, OH, there had been 5 crashes involving bicycles before the cycle tracks were installed. During the first year after the two way tracks were installed there were 14 crashes. Creating a situation for such possible mayhem, injury and or death seems to me to ignore the safety of all citizens, bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers. Knowing that such accidents are not the goal of the council or the community, as all of us wish to promote a safe environment for all, I request that you deny the installation of 2 way bike paths. Thank you again for your diligence and patience in exploring possibilities and new ideas, and working toward what is best for our community. Sincerely, Gina Hafemeister 1
