Subject:Agenda Correspondence 9/4/2018 Anholm Bikeway
Dear Council Members:
I wanted to write a letter in support of the positions and reasoning brought forth in the council correspondence dated
August 26, 2018 from Hemalata Dandekar with regard to the middle portion of the bikeway.
As a bicycle advocate and League Cycling Instructor with the League of American Bicyclists I fully recognize the benefits
and safety of cycle tracks, and support their use in many cases. However, cycle tracks are not always the ideal solution.
Accepting a cycle track in this location is to accept high motor vehicle volumes and speeds on a residential collector. The
root problem is how and how many motor vehicles are using a neighborhood street. We should address the issue at the
root level to reduce the traffic rather than focus on ways to allow safe cycling within the current traffic patterns, thereby
relieving undue burden on residents in the neighborhood as well as those wishing to safely use the streets for active
transportation. Significant traffic calming measures should be fully exhausted toward shifting circulation out of the
neighborhood before making any change to the neighborhood and its associated planning.
This is an opportunity to return neighborhood streets to the people who want to use them as such through extreme
traffic calming measures. In the words of former planning commissioner William Riggs in an August 4, 2018 San Luis
Obispo Tribune Viewpoint, “It’s time to think about travel with people and neighborhoods in mind, not by optimizing for
vehicular flows.”
Sincerely,
Sarah Flickinger
